Summary: Understanding and preventing disasters such as landslides is a challenge across the world with the level of damages increasing with the number, frequency and complexity of landslides as a result of changed rainfall patterns. Use of science facilitates assessment and prediction of landslides thus less damage as a result of more preparedness. Further there is need to link up land surface response systems and climatic events in order to improve understanding of impacts occasioned by rainfall triggered landslides. The use of GIS and remote sensing have proved very handy in providing data and enabling the analyses of spatial data thus leading to the process based landslide models, quantification of the slides and the zonation of landslide prone regions. Thus this research aims at developing a model that incorporates hydrologic parameters, climatic parameters as well as topographic parameters in order to aid understanding of land surface response to rain trigger. A case study of central region of Kenya, a water tower and where human activities have further affected soil is under study.
